Theology is the study of God.
Although we cannot be sure that if human beings, as mere creatures, can fully understand who God is and what God has done for us through our study, we believe that theology enables us to get know God as our creator and savior.
We, as a Methodist theological school, teach theology to cultivate committed Christian ministers who will act as spiritual leaders in the future and contribute to our society both locally and globally. The study is offered not just for ordained ministers, but also for lay leaders who want to spread the word of God to the world.
With this in mind, Henry Appenzeller University was founded in 1996 by the Korean Methodist Church of the Americas with the approval of the Korean Methodist Church. We received our initial full accreditation by the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) in February 2018. We are also associate members of ATS. With these accreditations, we are able to exchange lectures and credits with other accredited schools.
We have changed our name from ‘Methodist Theological School in the Americas’ to ‘Henry Appenzeller University’ in 2020. The name comes from the first Methodist missionary who arrived at the Korean Peninsula in 1885. We have a vision to build the kingdom of God here and now and to preach the gospel to the end of the world.
We will equip our students with “faith in practice and knowledge in action” so that they can keep their faith and serve their churches and communities, even in their very difficult ministerial situation as immigrant churches.
Specifically, we will focus on the theology and tradition of the Methodist Church to cultivate ministers, missionaries, and lay leaders who will preach the saving gospel to the world.
We will bring the word of God that is always true and unchanging to the continuously changing world. In the name of Jesus, we cordially invite you to apply to Henry Appenzeller University. We would like you to share our vision to make the church and the world a garden of God.
We will work with you.
Thank you so much.
Rev. Inho Jung
The president of Henry Appenzeller University.
